A partially substituted calix[4]resorcarene receptor and its selective recognition for soft metal cations (silver and mercury)
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of partially substituted 5,17-ethylthiomethylated calix[4]resorcarene derivative is reported and its structural and thermodynamic characteristics are investigated. The derivative interacts with silver cation in methanol forming a 1:1 complex, but it takes up two ions of mercury as its hosting ability is increased in methanol, acetonitrile and N,N-dimethylformamide forming 1:2 complexes.

Influence of a captured solvent molecule on the isomerization rates of calixarenes
Article Abstract:
The isomerization rates of calix[4]arene and p-tert-butyl-calix-[4]arene in a vacuum and in chloroform are studied with molecular dynamics simulations. Whereas the free energy as a function of the angle of the rotating phenol is relatively easily calculated for the former molecule, it proved much harder for the latter as it is held on with tenacity to a chloroform molecule.

Calixarenes in a membrane environment: a monolayer study on the miscibility of three p-tert-butylcalix[4]-arene [beta]-lactam derivatives with 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine
Article Abstract:
Lipid monolayers are used for studying the possibility of incorporation and translocation of three amphiphilic p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene derivatives across membranes. The results have shown that the miscibility is different for the 6-aminopenicillanic acid and the two benzylpenicillin derivatives.
